Tips for Choosing the Right Fabric for Your Next Sewing Project

Not sure which fabric to choose? Here are a few things to consider before getting started.

1. Start With Your Sewing Pattern

Okay, I know I said sometimes the fabric comes first. And I stand by that! But a sewing pattern is a great place to begin if you're looking to dive in but aren't sure where to start.

Check the recommended fabric types and look for information about weight, stretch and drape. A fabric that works beautifully for a structured jacket may not be suitable for a flowing summer dress.

2. Think About How You Want the Finished Garment to Feel

Do you want something soft and fluid, or a fabric with more structure?

Consider how you'll wear the finished piece and what feels comfortable to you.

3. Check the Fabric Composition

Different fibres have different characteristics.

Cotton and linen are popular natural-fibre options, while viscose offers beautiful drape. Knits provide stretch, and denim can be a great choice for more structured garments.

4. Order Enough Fabric

Before purchasing, check your pattern's fabric requirements, including the width of the fabric.

If you're working with a directional print or planning pattern matching, you may need additional metreage.

5. Don't Forget Your Notions

Thread, buttons, zippers, interfacing and other supplies can be just as important as the fabric itself.

Getting everything together before you start makes the sewing process much smoother.
